What is a TPMS valve? What you need to know.

What is a TPMS valve and why have we never heard of it?

Most of us keep an eye on our tyres… well, when the lights start flashing at least! But there’s one small car part that hardly anyone knows about, and it’s often the reason your tyre pressure warning light is acting up.

Say hello to the TPMS valve.

Never heard of it? You’re definitely not alone.

At Arrow Tyre Services in Newhaven, a friendly, family-run business that’s been looking after local drivers for over 50 years, we’re now fully equipped to fit and replace TPMS sensors. And we wanted to explain what they actually are (in normal human language!) and why they matter.

What exactly Is a TPMS valve?

Inside each of your wheels is a tiny sensor with a built-in battery.
This sensor constantly monitors your tyre pressure and sends the information to your dashboard.

You’ll know it as the tyre pressure warning light.

The problem?

These little batteries only last around 5–10 years and you can’t replace them separately. When the battery goes flat, the whole sensor needs swapping. And that’s where lots of tyre pressure “mystery faults” actually come from.

When your tyre pressure light seems wrong… it often isn’t the tyre

If your dashboard light:

  • keeps coming on even when your tyres are fine
  • won’t turn off
  • gives different pressures for each wheel
  • flashes and then stays lit

…it’s very likely that a TPMS sensor has failed.

Most drivers assume it’s “just another electrical glitch” and ignore it. Others think they need to take the car back to the main dealer (and pay dealer prices). But in most cases, it’s just that tiny sensor battery gone flat.

Good news: you don’t need the main dealer

This used to be a dealership-only job… not anymore!

Arrow Tyre Services now offer:

  • TPMS diagnostics
  •  Replacement valves & sensors
  •  Programming for your car
  •  Quick turnaround while you wait
  •  Competitive prices

So instead of a big dealership bill, you can now get the same service locally, from a trusted family business that actually cares.

Why do TPMS valves fail?

A few common reasons:

  • Battery expires – the most common cause
  • Corrosion on metal valve stems
  • Damage during tyre changes on older wheels
  • Faulty sensors on vehicles 5+ years old
  • Seasonal temperature changes affecting old units

If your car is between 2014 and 2019, you’re right in the window when lots of original sensors are reaching end-of-life.

What happens during a replacement?

It’s quick and straightforward:

  1. We read the fault code
  2. Remove the old TPMS sensor
  3. Fit a new rubber or metal valve
  4. Program and test the sensor
  5. Reset the dash light
  6. Check all four tyres while we’re there

It’s about safety, not just annoying warning lights

TPMS sensors are actually important for:

  • spotting slow punctures early
  • preventing blowouts
  • improving fuel efficiency
  • keeping tyres wearing evenly
  • MOT compliance (failed TPMS = MOT fail on many vehicles)

So, they’re more than just a flashing dashboard icon!
